Cambridge Cup 2025

This week we were pleased to once again have three of our members compete in the Cambridge Cup match rifle competition at Barton Rd. Shooting kicked off on Wednesday with HME zeroing at 200 yards, after which there was a brief interlude to rescue a car from a ditch. The afternoon brought with it the start of the Spoon shoot, a relatively relaxed 1000yard competition which nevertheless saw an impressive array of scores. Congratulations must go to Rosanne Furniss for winning the spoon with an incredible score of 50.9. Finally, it was time for the first of the three dinners of the Cambridge Cup, where CULRRC defend their hard earned reputation as a “dining club that shoots”. 

Thursday saw the beginning of the Cambridge cup itself, a two day long competition featuring two shoots at each of 1000, 1100 and 1200 yards. The wind was, as always, difficult to read owing mainly to the complete lack of wind flags on the range, which forces competitors to be somewhat creative with their calls. Everything from the range danger flag to the angle of the falling leaves was used. Thankfully, the shelter provided by the trees made the wind at 1000 yards relatively uneventful, though the same cannot be said for 1200 where the call of “magpie three” was not uncommon. Despite the challenging conditions the day ended with a number of strong scores, with none of the top four firers dropping more than six points overall. Friday saw similar conditions, with the looming threat of heavy rain forecast for the afternoon. Quick shooting and impressive marking allowed the points to be cleared mere minutes before the rain started, followed by a slightly wet reading of the final results. 

We would like to give a massive congratulations to Rosanne Furniss for winning her first Cambridge Cup with an excellent score of 439.58 out of 450, followed closely by Nick Brasier and Julian Peck separated only be Vs on a score of 437. We are also proud to announce that Luca Schwarz and Vita Chamberlain-Evans came first and third respectively in the Notman Student’s competitions, with Luca winning the Notman Cup on an impressive score of 435.46. Special congratulations must go to Wg Cdr David Calvert for winning the Dog Rose with the highest score of the competitions: an incredible 447.60. 

Finally, we would like to give thanks to all of the volunteers from both Universities working behind the firing point and in the butts to make shooting possible, and to Chris Roads for his continuing devotion for the CULRRC and for the stories and history that he has shared with us. We would like the thank the Selwyn catering team for the series of excellent dinners we all enjoyed, and we would like to give special thanks to Julian Peck for organising and running the entire competition while still outshooting most of us. This was  highly successful and enjoyable Cambridge Cup and we look forward to next year.
